Nothing happened to him, he never died, but however, they tried to make it look like he was swept away in one of the final episodes, and died.

But in the series finale, it turns out he was alive the whole time, he was just lost at sea, until Richard & Miles saved him, and the three of them, along with Kate, Sawyer, & Claire, escaped the Island in the series finale.
